RASIRC Ships New RainMaker Humidification System for use in Metal Heat Treating and Decarburizing

Device humidifies process gases for precise dew point control

San Diego, Calif. – April 17, 2009 –RASIRC®, the steam purification company, today announced the shipment of a new RainMaker™ Humidification System (RHS) specially designed for metal heat treating and decarburizing processes. The system will be used by one of the world’s largest steel producers in its decarburizing processes. The RHS provides a steady stream of purified water vapor while maintaining a set dew point. The RHS was named one of the most innovative products by R&D magazine.

During the treatment process, carbon is removed from the metal. Water combines with the carbon to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Water is used in place of oxygen in this process to prevent oxidation of the metal during carbon removal. In wet hydrogen-containing atmospheres this reaction accounts for most of the decarburization.

“The RASIRC RHS is ideal for precise control of water vapor used in specialty heat treating processes,” said Jeff Spiegelman, president of RASIRC. “The unique feature of the RHS is the hydrophilic non-porous membrane which allows water vapor to pass into the gas stream but prevents the gas from entering the water. This allows for a much greater range of flow and pressure conditions. It also provides an additional level of safety when working with flammable or toxic gases such as hydrogen, which is often used as one of the process gases.”

Other devices such as atomizers and vaporizers do not completely convert water to steam, but create microdroplets. These water droplets lead to process contamination and non-uniformity.

The RASIRC RHS is available in several configurations to suit different applications. Both external and internal dew point and thermal control probes are available. Units are available to support a range of delivery pressures, carrier flow rates, humidity requirements, and power options.
